Presenter: For Safer Internet Day, we're thinking about how we can inspire positive changes online. But what does that actually mean? Well, luckily we've got a few experts here, so let's go find out.
We're playing a game to learn what the young people think about the changes in their digital lives. So, we've got a moral compass on the floor, with four choices. They are: I'm not sure; I agree; I think it depends; and I disagree. All you need to do is go towards the compass point that you think is the best fit.
So, guys, I'm going to read out the first statement, and you're just going to go to whichever compass point that you think is the best fit.
So, social media can make society better.
Student one: I agree because you can share a point online – like cleaning the oceans, stopping deforestation – and then it can spread to more people.
Presenter: So why do you disagree?
Student two: Because I think, like, people online might just, they might be saying stuff just to make you think certain ways.
Student three: I think it's worse because people are more negative online, and I would think they're more positive in real life.
Presenter: So, off the back of that, when you think about, um, social media companies, do you think they are making, like, positive changes in society or not?
Student four: People have different opinions of what's going on on social media and, like, if it's good or bad.
Presenter: So, here's the next statement. It's getting harder to know what to trust online.
OK, why do you disagree?
Student five: Because on Instagram, sometimes it says that the fact checkers say this is false. So, like, that helps.
Student six: So, a lot of people, like, do stuff for, like clout and stuff, just to feel like, sort of fit in with everyone else, so you can't always trust what you see, because it's not always, sort of, true.
Student seven: And a lot of the time, people make fake accounts.
Student eight: I think there needs to be stuff put in place to, like, to, like, so there's less hackers and less trolls trying to, like, to, like, hack your account.
Presenter: The last statement is: Artificial intelligence will make life fairer for all. So what do you guys think?
Student nine: I feel like sometimes there might be bugs, so it's not always right. It could sometimes be wrong.
Student one: I agree because I think AI is making work easier for humans, and, well, social media apps are having the same view because they're slowly adding AI into their apps, and …
Presenter: So, it can be quite helpful in, um, certain situations as well.
I want to thank you guys for all participating today. You guys gave really, really good answers, so give yourselves a round of applause!
