Ask E-tutor

Hi! I’m E-tutor, or Emma. I’m here to help with any study-related problems, whether big or small.

Post a message on the forum below.

Meg

What should I say to my sister?

Hi, E-tutor. Unfortunately, I share a bedroom and a desk with my elder sister. She continually distracts me because she's noisy and disorganised. I think she's disrespectful. I’ve got exams in a fortnight and I desperately need to revise. I can’t concentrate when she’s studying too and the desk is always overflowing with stuff so I can’t find anything. If I try to have a dialogue with my sister, she gets annoyed. Can you help?

E-tutor

Re: What should I say to my sister?

Hi, Meg. That’s a common complaint between siblings. Why don’t you discuss a rota system so that you use the desk at different times? Or maybe you could study at the local library, cultural centre or community centre a few days a week. Make sure you’ve got storage space for everything on your desk: folders and containers for your paper and stationery. If everything has its own place, it will be easier to keep orderly. It might even be enjoyable to do this together. If it’s easier to write instead of talking face to face, try messaging her and explain how awful you feel.

Rudy

Against the clock

My problem is time – or lack of it! Next month I’ve got 12 exams in three weeks. How can I possibly study for all of them? It’s complicated. I think it's impossible.

E-tutor

Re: Against the clock

Hi, Rudy. It isn’t impossible but you DO have to get started NOW. Make a study plan and highlight periods of study time for each subject. Make a detailed plan for this week and then do the same for the weeks ahead. It’s better to study for an hour or so a day than just once a week, all day. Your brain needs time to process information.

Hayley

Disaster

My problem is silly and a bit embarrassing. I just find it hard to study. I always stop and start and I keep getting the impression that I’m learning the wrong things. I’m a disaster. I don’t think you can really help me.

E-tutor

Re: Disaster

Hayley, your problem isn’t silly at all! It's very real and lots of people experience the same thing as you. Sometimes things improve if they join a study group. Set up a group and meet a couple of days a week after school to study together. Take turns to give presentations and teach other what you know. It's called 'peer teaching' and is an effective and efficient practice for lots of students.

I sometimes will feel nervous about the exam but I usually can got very good marks. However, I think this emotion will affects my feeling and reduce my confidence. About the study tips, I think we should make a plan every day, and we should write your homework immediately. Another two really useful tips is you should take a short break when you can't concentrate and study immediately if you have a brilliant idea. Finally, if you have something you don't understand clearly, you can ask people around you like your friends, teachers or your parents.

I want to believe that I am not having any study related problems but sometimes, I also think I am a bit of a procrastinator. I find it a little bit difficult to study regularly everyday but I always achieve good marks in every test. The reason is, I always have enough time to study about particular subjects before the exam days.

My tip would be to get enough sleep most of the nights so your brain can remember very easily. This is especially important before the night of the exam day. I know a lot of students stay up late in that kind of time but you really shouldn't as it can make you weak and sleepy on the test day.

My biggest problem is the fear of communicating with people, especially in English. > However, I am trying to improve it because I know that English is very important in the world. > I would like to receive some advice on how to improve.

Yeah ! I have a common problem and a tip for it, this problem is called " boredom ". Who has be studying something and, suddenly, stop doing that activity because it felt bored? well, I'm still have that problem but my best tip to face this sort of problem is " takee a break and play something you like for a while " I'm really sure you're gonna improve and that bad felling will dissapear immediatelly. There might be other tips but this works a lot with me, don't lose anything, if you try it :)

For me sometimes it can be difficult to start studying, especially in the summer, when we have holidays(I usually continue studying languages in summer), I sometimes interrupt on sth. And other problem is that I also share my room with sister, and she might start taking, watching sth, while I`m studying.

I don't have any study problems. So I want to share my tips with you: First, believe in yourself. İt is an important and first step to be successful. Second, make a schedule. It can change from person to person. For example İf you don't want to plan every minute you can to-do list. Third, give short breaks. These short breaks give you more energy and they keep your brain active. During these breaks, you can do sports or exercise. Fourth don't put off anything. Start studying now. And the last tip: Be motivated and focus. If you really want it you can do it

Miss this tips: Use mind-map to remember fast and long. Don't write all the word from the lesson down, just use the key word because the key word is the most important word to study.

I don't have any study problems. I want to give you some advices about how to manage your time every day. If you really want to learn something and get good results in it, start studying NOW, but not from next week of from next Monday, because people who think like that never start. Make a study schedule for everyday. You should have regular breaks. Do some exersices, it gives your brain vital relaxation and power to continue studying after necessary rest. You should go outside at least two times a day(if you don't go to school or study online)Study every day without finding an excuse for to be lazy.

Well, I've got a big problem with learning English. I always feel a lack of confidence when speaking with other people. Shyness and embarrassment make me not be able to find an interesting topic to attract people talking with me. Not only that, I admit I don't have a basic foundation in English. I'm starting to wonder about using words, vocabulary, and sentences. I don't know how to do reasonably. And I have a short attention span, I always have trouble focusing on tasks for any length of time without being easily distracted. Everything around me always successfully attracts my interest.

My big problem is afraid of communication. Actually, it’s very hard for me to chat with the others , especially by English. However, I will try to improve it because I know that English is very popular and important nowadays!!!

*Biggest not bigest. So you can study 1 hour than you break( or 30 minutes ), if you don't finish yet after that time, relax 10-20 minutes and then study again.

i have some problems to learning English. I become really stressed when i can't speak English very well. Because of stress I usually forget things which i have studied.

Submitted by chofeefah on Wed, 05/13/2020 - 06:11

My problem with studying is myself. When I started to study, I couldn't be disciplined with my study time and I couldn't concentrate while studying because of cellphone. But still, I want to study. So I use my time with my cell phone by reading content related to my studies. Since I am an English student who loves playing cellphone and likes to study religion, I use my cellphone to read religious articles in English. The benefit is that I get new English words and religious knowledge, so that my time with my cellphone is not wasted, and there are lessons that can be gained. Like the saying, while diving drinking water.

I have some bad habits that I doodle every time I study. Also I am distracted well many times by the other sounds and conversations from people around me. At last, I spend a lot of times doing nothing. I mean, I 'waste' my times. When I first start study, I can't help feel so sleepy and tired. How can I concentrate in my study? I stay up late till it's 12 O' clock. But anything has done till then! I want to improve my studying habits and grades. Fortunately, I am such good at study. But if I go to the middle school, I am worried about my less-knowledge and lousy grades. I wish I could get the information from E-tutor about my problems.

My advice is to plan what will you do on that day. Be realistic - you shouldn't try to achieve a goal that you're not able to do. If you can't achieve a goal that you believe in but it's impossible, you would get disappointed. Aim to achieve your goal, at least being close to it. By this way, you can feel that you want to/should study.
